Accommodations

Whether a roof overhead means a tent, rustic cabin or a palatial hotel suite, the Maritime Provinces offer a wide range of accommodations for travelers who want to get close to the action near the sea, the Cabot Trail, the Bay of Fundy or any one of Maritime Canada’s many tourist attractions.

Every year thousands of people experience the joy that comes with owning a cottage in Maritime Canada, without the attendant headaches. Rental cabins are located in some of the most magnificent parts of the region and often feature amenities like bicycle and boat rentals, laundry facilities, miniature golf and tennis.

Camping out can be a great way to save money and get back to nature at the same time. And Maritime campgrounds offer an impressive array of facilities. The true outdoor type will find things like tent pads, firewood and nature trails. For large RV operators, some campgrounds are even starting to offer things like telephone and Internet hookups, 50-amp service and cable and satellite TV hookups.

In summer many Maritime universities open their dormitory doors to weary travelers. The accommodations are spartan and the bathrooms are usually located down the hall, but for the tourist on a tight budget, the price is definitely attractive.

Beautifully restored historic inns have become a favorite for travelers to the Maritimes in recent years. Historic inns offer a romantic step back into a slower-paced time when traveling just a few miles was a wonderful adventure. From the heart of downtown Halifax to the pastoral settings of the Saint John River Valley,  Maritime Canada has  dozens of historic inns to choose from.

A close cousin of the historic inn, the bed and breakfast has a special appeal. While the idea of spending the night in what is essentially a stranger’s house may not be for everyone, those who can conquer their shyness are in for one of the Maritimes’ great travel experiences. Bed and breakfasts are a great way to make new friends and get to know a community in an intimate way that’s not possible in larger accommodations.

Motels and hotels often offer amenities like swimming pools, whirlpool baths, restaurants and housekeeping services: all things that translate into a relaxing getaway. Many are strategically located near Maritime Canada’s favorite tourist attractions. The region’s hotels have built a solid reputation over the years for fine dining, attentive service and excellent catering facilities.

Most Maritime accommodations use the Canada Select rating system. Canada Select  uses a five-star classification system: a one-star property meets the Canada Select standards of cleanliness comfort and safety with few extras, while five stars denote an exceptional facility that is among the finest in the country.  Camping Select is a similar rating system used by area campgrounds. Camping Select actually uses two sets of start ratings: the first denotes the quality of the facility; the second rates the standard of recreational activities at the campground.
